Experience the Power of Traditional West African Music!

The African Youth Symphony Orchestra (AYSO) is an exciting performance ensemble where young musicians come together to explore the vibrant rhythms and melodies of West Africa! Open to all skill levels, this dynamic group introduces traditional instruments like the Balafon, Djembe, Dunduns, Ngoni, and Tama in a fun and engaging way.

About the Program

From the heart of the Mali Empire’s musical heritage, members of the orchestra will learn to play powerful polyrhythmic compositions, sing traditional songs, and create their own arrangements. Inspired by the legendary griots—West African storytellers and musicians—each performance brings history to life through music, movement, and storytelling. Our young performers will:

  • Learn traditional rhythms and melodies

  • Play authentic West African instruments

  • Discover the cultural and historical significance behind the music

  • Develop confidence, teamwork, and critical thinking through ensemble play

How It Works

Members of the orchestra will experience

  • Weekly rehearsals focused on different instruments

  • Hands-on training in polyrhthmic compositions

  • Learning basic Manding language related to music

  • Culminating their progress in a showcase performance

The Instruments

Bala: 21+ key idiophone that is both percussive and melodic. The Bala is the predecessor to the xylophone and the marimba.

Djembe: Hour-glass shaped hand drum

Dunduns: A trio of bass drums

Ngoni: 4-string lute and predecessor of the banjo

Tama/Talking Drum: A drum that mimics the human voice

Bring the Vision to Life!

More than just an ensemble, the AYSO is a celebration of culture, creativity, and collaboration. Through rehearsals and performances, young artists will develop confidence, teamwork, and a deeper connection to the rhythms that have shaped generations.

The African Youth Symphony Orchestra is a developing initiative, and we are currently seeking a community partner or host to bring this ensemble to life. If your organization is interested in supporting or hosting this program, we’d love to collaborate! This program can be adapted for semester-long offerings or customized to fit your community’s needs.
